Turmeric

All of us are of turmeric use in our daily lives. Yes, yes! You got it right. I’m talking about that yellow-orange coloured spice that is often used in making food curries. Apart from being used in the kitchen, I remember my grandmother used to add turmeric in warm milk after I got injured.

As we go down the list, the beneficial uses of turmeric take in its skin healing, anti-cancer and several other properties. This household spice is known for its magical properties. But have you ever wondered if is it worth the hype?

Turmeric- A magic herb

A few years ago my mother was diagnosed with fatty liver. Despite going to the best liver doctor in Karachi, she still relied upon home remedies. She started consuming turmeric capsules alongside proper diet and physical activity. Though it could be a combined effect but she lost a reasonable amount of weight which helped to relieve her disease symptoms too.

Based on her experience and research, I’m sharing some of the health benefits of turmeric below. In case you are wondering to know the health benefits of turmeric, I suggest you read this article.

Health benefits of turmeric

1- Bioactive components in turmeric are the secret!

Turmeric is being used for thousands of years for various purposes. All the good properties of turmeric are due to the presence of curcumin in turmeric, which is the active ingredient. Curcumin has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. But the absorption of curcumin in the blood is limited, however, black pepper is known to assist it.

2- Turmeric can help with inflammatory disease

You must hear about the benefit of turmeric tea for arthritis. Turmeric can help people with arthritis or even other inflammatory diseases including pancreatitis etc. The secret lies in secret ingredient curcumin, present in ginger.

Curcumin is responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric. Consuming the right amount of curcumin can be even more helpful than commonly available inflammation-fighting medicines.

3-Turmeric can reduce the oxidative stress in the body

We keep hearing about the oxidative stress and antioxidative properties of turmeric or other natural ingredients. Oxidative stress can be bad for our body and can be damaging to cellular DNA. But the antioxidants present in turmeric can reduce the oxidative stress by utilizing the free radicals responsible for oxidative stress in the body. Further, turmeric can also boost the natural antioxidant enzyme in our body.

4- Turmeric is heart-healthy

Hart is one of the most important organs in our body. Human heart problems are quite common and can be crucial for our overall health. Turmeric is known to improve our heart health for obvious reasons. Turmeric is associated with improved functioning of endothelial (membrane of the blood vessel). Apart from this, turmeric can also reduce the inflammation and oxidative stress which is another risk factor for heart diseases.

Despite all the benefits of turmeric, there is a safe limit for turmeric consumption. Exceeding this limit can be harmful to you. I was attending a webinar where a doctor from Bayview Hospital Karachi was referring to the rare incidence where patients developed hepatitis C after over-consuming it. Though such cases are quite rare there one should always monitor the amount of turmeric they are consuming.

5-Turmeric is brain healthy!

Our brain function is crucial to our overall health but the brain functioning can get affected over time. The growth of neurons in the brain is responsible for the proper functioning of the brain which is dependent upon the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Decreased levels of BDNF are associated with brain disorders affecting brain functioning. Turmeric increases the production of this factor which improves brain health in general.

6-Anticancer potential of turmeric

Turmeric is also known for its anti-cancer activity as it can prevent the onset of cancer in the first place. Turmeric can also inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Furthermore, turmeric can also play a role in the death of cancer cells. Turmeric can aid in preventing different types of cancer including breast, pancreatic, colorectal, gastric and prostate cancer etc.

Bottom Line!

Turmeric is not less than a magic herb and is known for its several health benefits. Adding turmeric to your diet can be a smart move to prevent health problems in future. The safest approach to add turmeric is through your diet rather than directly switching to supplements.
